MC Ant - Powerhouse 1988
Dangerous Dame - My City 1992
FM Blue f. Dangerous Dame - Oakland Style 1993
For most people who are at least familiar with the name, Ant Banks is synonymous with Too $hort production. This equation ignores the fact that the names Anthony Banks and Todd Shaw didn’t appear on the same record until 1992’s “Shorty the Pimp.” Prior to that, Short Dog was often listed as a producer himself, along with folks like Al Eaton, Ted Bohanon and Randy Austin. Banks on the other hand came up as a DJ/producer for another Oakland rapper, MC Ant, who released two local LP’s at the turn of the decade. The first one, 1989’s “The Great,” also provides us with the early Ant Banks pictorials seen above. After leaving MC Ant to join the Dangerous Crew, Banks refined the typical Too $hort funk for the ’90s with a string of essential albums on Dangerous Music/Jive. He even picked up the mic, releasing “Sittin’ On Somethin’ Phat,” “The Big Badass” and “Do Or Die” between 1993 and 1995, before reassuming his primary producer role with the star-studded “Big Thangs” and the “Ant Banks Presents The Whole Damn Yay” series.

Closed Published by skinny May 25th, 2005 in Uncategorized. So, because of pressure from some of my friends (Dave, www.grey021.com/thoughts), I’ve decided to make a quick blog hit (or is it just a blog? dern next millenium Internet terms) before going to prayer meeting. What’s been going on? Alot and nothing.
First, don’t know if I said it before, but our duplex is being sold. We had first crack at the place since we’re tenants and we made an offer based on the condition of the downstairs apt. (it’s crap… there’s fungus growing down there and it hasn’t been lived in since a few months after we moved in almost 3 years ago). Our offer was rejected and now the owner is courting investors. We’re trying to move out. What’s frustrating is we really don’t have the cash. And that brings me too…
My job situation sucks so I’ve been trying to figure out what to do. I sent my resume to another station and I’m praying something turns up there and I’m trying for other oppurtunities here. So, I need lots of prayer on that. I’m just not getting enough work where I am and I have no way at this moment to supplement that income.
Are you tired of that same ole Hip Hop??

Highland Place Mobsters - Dirt Road White Girl 1992
Monica - Ain’t Nobody (Ft Treach) 1996
Monica - Ain’t Nobody (Instrumental) 1996
Columbus, Georgia’s Dallas Austin first came to prominence working on the first ABC album and the first Boyz II Men album for Motown. “Motownphilly”, “Iesha”, all that good shit. After that he joined forces with the local RnB kings LA and Babyface to work on his first big career project, TLC. You know the story, biggest selling female group of all time (at least for a bit) and all that, some great records in amongst some toss. “What About Your Friends” was Austin in finest pop mode, “Creep” was smooth, hits were made.
Clive Davis must have offered Dallas his own label around the time of “CrazySexyCool” because in 95 he launched Rowdy with his other career project, Monica. Now Monica has been one of my favourite singers since her debut “Don’t Take It Personal” took over black radio in London for what seemed like a whole year. Rowdy also played host to some pretty good Hiphop from Illegal and Y’all So Stupid but hasn’t exactly become a household name, mainly due to a pretty sparse release schedule and Monica jumping ship after her second album.
