Cop charged with murder in Prado shooting A Milwaukee police officer who fatally shot 25-year-old Wilbert Javier Prado in March 2005 was charged this morning with first-degree intentional homicide and six counts of perjury for lying to the inquest jury that examined the case.

Alfonzo Glover, 35, was off duty when he fired at Prado near S. 9th St. and W. Ohio Ave.

Prado, who was unarmed and intoxicated, was shot eight times, mostly from behind. The inquest jury in May 2005 found the shooting justified, but the verdict is only advisory.

“I do not expect it will be easy. It will be a difficult and challenging case,” District Attorney E. Michael McCann said at a news conference. Glover was being taken into custody this morning.

Glover was suspended May 15. He had been on administrative duty since the shooting while the case has been under review by McCann, who hired an outside expert to reconstruct the incident.

That expert, Robert Wozniak, a mechanical engineer and accident reconstruction specialist, finished his report in March.

According to the report, Glover was not being truthful when he described the sequence of events, McCann said.

Glover said he was driving home when he saw a van following him.

As he got out of his car, he said, the van driven by Prado hit him.

Glover said he fell to the ground, then shot at the van.

Prado got out and started to reach into his coat, according to Glover.

During a foot chase, Glover fired at Prado numerous times, police said. ==============

MILWAUKEE—A Milwaukee police officer charged Tuesday with homicide has committed suicide in his home on the city’s south side.

The 16-page complaint was just filed Tuesday morning, charging Alfonzo Glover with first-degree intentional homicide. He was also accused of lying during an inquest into the shooting death of Wilbert Prado.

Glover was suspended earlier this month and turned himself in without incident this morning.
